Enemy Zero is an action-adventure game released for the SEGA
Saturn console back in 1997/1998 on 4 CD's and is now also available
for PC. The action part of the game takes place in realtime rendered
3D-corridores of a spaceship called 'The Aki' while the adventure parts
are realized using pre-rendered CGI-movies inside rooms.
The spaceship vehicle 'The Aki' is returning to earth. Then,
suddenly the ship gets in trouble, it's vibrating and an emergency is
caused. You see something very strong but invisible attacking the door,
stepping on the broken door and hunting through the corridor very, very
fast.
The emergency caused the cryogenetic sleep chamber of Laura Lewis to
break up and she awakes. She tries to contact a crew member named
Parker via video-phone and becomes witness of his bloody death caused
by an invisible, screaming alien.
Now it's up to Laura to rescue the ship, to fight the aliens and to try
to return to earth. But before that, she will discover the whole story
of this disaster... .
The training is really necessary to successfully
fight the aliens, because....you cannot see them, you can only hear
them!
Laura got a small device called VPS(VEXX Positioning System) in her ear
that signals the presence of an alien with beeps. The nearer an alien
is, the more often it beeps. The tone frequency of a beep depends on
whether the alien is in front, behind or besides you.
To fight the aliens, you got a gun that unfortunatly needs some seconds
to power up. Then you got only some seconds to release the button for a
shot. Furthermore, some guns hold only enough energy for a small number
of shots and need to be recharged from time to time.
This training does not focus on graphics, but on
localising and fighting the aliens. If you want to get an impression,
download and watch the VCR recorded movies of this years E0-session of
me and a friend:
To watch this movies,
you'll need WinRAR to unpack and a PC capable of playing .AVI
files with Divx
5.0.x and an mp3 codec installed. Don't be irritated because I used
WinRAR to pack it again. In this case, it really gains some compression
and additionally protects the sensitive .AVI files from beeing
corrupted while downloading, because it got the power to recover them.

So, my training
should be a good example how to become a gunslinger in E0! But don't
mind the slow start after such a long time having not played E0.

That is what happens
to the weak guys! Be aware of acting like shown in the last seconds of
the movie!

The game was created by a japanese software firm called Warp.
With Kenji Eno as the founder and mastermind of Warp, the company
started business with developing the Horror-Adventure D for the 32 bit
console 3DO. The game featured prerendered CGI-movies on 2 CD's with
Laura Lewis as main character. All over the game she does not say a
single word... . This first appearence of Laura Lewis in a videogame
was converted at least for SEGA Saturn and unfortunatly also for FONY
PeeSX.
As far as I know, Warp first started developing Enemy Zero for
the FONY PeeSX, but got trouble with that company(who does not?) and
decided to exclusively publish the game for SEGA Saturn. Again, Laura
Lewis is the main character, but new characters joined the team like
Kimberley.
Warp also started to develop D2 for the 3DO successor M2, but
that machine was never released. After a long time of development, D2
came finally out for the SEGA Dreamcast. On 4 GD's the game did not
feature CGI-movies, but beautiful realtime rendered 3D graphics. Not
only Laura Lewis appeared there(and rumors say she might have talked
for the first time), but also Kimberley from E0.
Besides this great 3 games, Warp also developed and released
other titles in japan. One to mention is a game that only used sound,
but no graphics! Very cool!
It's definitly the musical talent of Kenji Eno and his extraordinary
visions and ideas concerning videogames, that make these games so
special.
But where is Warp today? I found out that they renamed to
"Superwarp", but the webside is no longer accessible. So the truth is
hard to realize, but Warp seems to be dead... .
So, here's something very cool: an interview with Kenji Eno!
It was made by Sega Online.
Interview with Mr. Kenji Eno President of
Warp, Producer, Director & Storywriter of Enemy Zero
Sega Online: If you weren't making games,
what would you want to do?
Eno-san: After I left high school, I pretty much just listened to
music, read magazines and didn't do much for about a year. Then I
realized I had to do so I found a job working for a software company.
If I weren't making games, I would be something music-related. I'd
probably go back to school and earn an advanced degree in it first.
There are an enormous amount of talented people in the music industry -
I think a degree is essential. The other thing I might do is some type
of free-lance work, but I'd still make music on the side
Sega Online: Who is your favorite group?
Eno-san: I listened to the Beatles, and YMO (Yellow Magic Orchestra)
when I was young. I also spent a lot of time making my own music,
playing the organ. Eventually my father bought me a computer for the
purpose of creating music. Learning how to make music on the computer,
lead to my career in making videogames. In junior high school I formed
a couple of bands - a rock band, a techno band and a punk band. In one
way or another, I was always involved in music. I don't have any
particular music that I can say is my absolute favorite, my taste is
diverse, however I do tend towards music from the UK and European
music. I'm listening to Bjork a lot lately.
Sega Online: How much did the concept of
Enemy Zero change from the time you began developing it to its
completion?
Eno-san: The story is almost the same. Typically I think about the
storylines when I'm on a long airplane flight. That's what happened
with Enemy Zero, I was on my way back from a trip to Germany and I
thought up the story. I find when I'm flying it's the perfect time to
think about stories, because there are no phones ringing and no
interruptions. Once I think up a story I usually stick closely to it in
the game's development.
Sega Online: What will Laura Lewis' next
be?
Eno-san: She's going to be in D2. When I was thinking up a character
for Enemy Zero, I knew I wanted a character whose motions would show
off the tributes of a interactive movie game. The fluid movements of a
woman seemed appropriate to meet this challenge. Since we had Laura
from D, we decided to modify her character for Enemy Zero.
Sega Online: What do you hope people will
most appreciate when they play this game?
Eno-San: That it's different. Unlike fighting role-playing or racing, I
think gamers will really feel this game, that they'll be drawn into the
experience, even on an emotional level.
Sega Online: Eno-san, We know how busy
you are and appreciate your taking the time to meet - it's been a
pleasure, thank you!

The interview is taken from the Enemy Zero
Guide which you can find in the cheats section.
You enter the game as Laura Lewis, just awakened from
hypersleep and being located in her personal room. This is the
movie-driven adventure mode in which you can navigate through the room
from point to point, pick up first items, look into the inventory and
save the game or use the VEXX computer system that is installed in each
room to gain information about the ship, crew members, items or to
contact crew members via video-phone.
But out there, outside the rooms, there are the invisible alien enemies
and you haven't got a gun jet... .
So, you might have an impression on what this game is about.
And now let me tell you, why it's worth to have such a cool fanpage on
the net.
It's just the only game on earth, delivering such a unique experience.
No other game will make you sweat and full of fear like this. And when
you lay the pad besides, believe me, your heart will bump as if you'd
ran for your life. And you did!
The tension of the game is so high that most people just can't stand
it. Like Vorbes for example. He does not touch the pad, except for
playing the training(being forced by me), but he enjoys the spectacle
hiding behind the sofa very much.
So, traditionally for one time each year, Vorbes and me take
out E0 and dive deep into the game's atmosphere and prepare to fight
for our life. This takes so much energy that we both need one year to
recover from that session!
Unfortunately, this year's E0 session did not end that
successful like the one of last year. But you can watch it and see for
yourself if you'll have to power up the last gun first to defeat the
invisible enemies, like Vorbes adviced me to do:
To watch this movies,
you'll need WinRAR to unpack and a PC capable of playing .AVI
files with Divx
5.0.x and an mp3 codec installed. Don't be irritated because I used
WinRAR to pack it again. In this case, it really gains some compression
and additionally protects the sensitive .AVI files from beeing
corrupted while downloading, because it got the power to recover them.

|
A real tragedy! I
have never lost my life such dramatically like shown here in 2002's
session.
1st mistake after 40s: stepping back and not hunting the alien in the
tight area.
2nd mistake after 55s: following Vorbes' advice to not fully power up
the gun.

I have collected some reviews from the web so that you do not
have to search on your own. And I listed them here, regardless if they
are critical or not.
Also, this table gives you a short overview on each one, so it's easier

Laura Lewis' voice in US/EU version of E0 is
supplied by Jill Cunnif, lead singer of an all-female rock group called
Luscious Jackson. Search the web with google by clicking here.
Music was composed by Michael Nyman, the one who
was involved in films like "The Piano", "The diary of Anne Frank" and
"Gattaca". He says, he has never seen the game itself.
About him and Enemy Zero, you can find a bio/bibliographical text here and a story with a lot of quotations of him here.
Have you ever thought what this text is all about
that shows up in the middle or at the end of the intro trailer? Never
been able to read that quickly? Well, I've captured the intro and was
able to pause the movie. So, the two texts are one and the same and if
you want to read it, take a look at the right side of this page... .
